Last Snowbird Ski Day as a Local

SNOWBIRD, UT — I had planned a ski day for my last full day in Utah before I move to Boston. Although very little of the mountain is open (still), I looked forward to just taking a few runs, taking a few photos, and leaving Snowbird (and Utah) on my own terms.

SNOWBIRD, UT — I guess it's fitting that I'm moving back to the east coast in less than a week and the conditions at Snowbird are decidedly east coast. By east coast, I mean the conditions were hardpacked with thin coverage.

SNOWBIRD, UT — After a one-day foray into skiing at Brighton last week, Snowbird opened and so I'm back to skiing at Snowbird, my ski area of choice.

First Official Ski Day of the Season

BRIGHTON, UT — Somehow, the Big Cottonwood Canyons resorts (Brighton and Solitude) opened on November 7, 2009, while the Little Cottonwood resorts (Alta and Snowbird) remained closed. Without a season pass commitment on account of a possible move to back east, I was more than willing to ski at Brighton or Solitude to get the ski season started.

Skiing by Moonlight

ALTA, UT — After the valley and the mountains got socked with snow on Tuesday, I suggested that we skip a trip to the snow hut and instead ski at Alta so that Steve could get his October ski day in on his quest to ski every month consecutively. (With this October ski day, he completed his quest.)

ALTA, UT — Steve plans to ski every month this year. With that goal of his, and a sliver of snow still left on Gunsight at Alta Ski Area, he invited me to join him on another summer ski day.

Not an Awesome Ski Day

SNOWBIRD, UT — After my awesome ski day earlier in the season, I had high hopes for this one, which was only my second ski day of the season and my first since stopping my blood thinning medication (long story). Unfortunately, with my long layoff from skiing, my legs were not in good enough condition to handle the variable spring snow conditions. My legs got very tired during every run.

Awesome Ski Day

SNOWBIRD, UT — After a long layoff from skiing on account of the blood thinning medication I have to take, I heard that Mark Deaver would be in Salt Lake City for the weekend so I decided to ignore my doctor's orders and go skiing for the first time this season.
