First Snowbird Powder Day

SNOWBIRD, UT — My second day of the ski season was a powder day. I woke at about 6 a.m. so I could be out the door by 7 and catch the ski bus at the parking lot at the mouth of Little Cottonwood Canyon. (The driving conditions on the canyon road were too treacherous for my car.) Although the bus was damn annoying in every way, it got me safely to the ski resort and safely back down the canyon at the end of the day.

First Snowbird Ski Day as a Local

SNOWBIRD, UT — My first ski day of the 2005-2006 ski season was also my first Snowbird ski day as a local. Only two lifts were running: the Mid-Gad lift and the GadZoom lift. We skied on about 1,800 vertical feet, which is decent. Basically, the conditions (sunny, packed-powder/man-made/groomed snow) on this day were better than mid-season conditions at Bristol Mountain. I skied OK. A boot adjustment during the middle of the day did the trick. I'm definitely nowhere near mid-season form, but it's coming back to me quickly. We skied about half the day. It was a good first ski day.
